2010 is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain - an aerial battle that was waged between the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe the German Air Force over the skies of England from June 1940 until the winter of that year. This Battle of was a pre-cursor to Operation Sea Lion, the German operation for the invasion of England in Autumn of 1940; and without its successful conclusion by the Royal Air Force Great Britain would have been invaded that year.
To commemorate this anniversary the Royal Air Force and various members of the Royal Air Force family will be hosting a series of country-wide events which celebrate the bravery, heroism and sacrifices made by the pilots and ground-crew who protected our skies during our nation's darkest hour and of the people of Britain during 1940.
The Royal Air Force Museum requires your help in visually documenting these events. Accordingly, we are asking children and adults throughout the U.K to submit their Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary Photographs in a National Competition by 30th September.
If you are holding your own Battle of Britain event and would like to submit photographs of it, we would welcome you entering the competition.
The Best Children's Photograph and the Best Adult Photograph will be shown at the Royal Air Force Museum as part of its annual Royal Air Force Photo Exhibition in London with each winner presented with a plaque and a selection of Prizes at the exhibition's opening ceremony in January 2011.
The winner of the Children's category will be awarded £200 worth of prizes of their choice from the Museum's shop whilst the winner of the Adult Category will receive a Blackberry Storm donated to the Museum by Vodafone UK.
