As the Battle of Britain moves from living memory to historical legend, the Battle of Britain Beacon presents an opportunity to reinterpret the Museum's world class collection for a new generation. To meet this challenge, it is vital that the lessons supporting the artefacts are understood by all users in an enjoyable, thoughtful and accessible way.
Learning will be at the heart of the Beacon, as it is at the heart of the Museum's existing work. The design of the building, the arrangement of display space and the choice of exhibits will all contribute to the learning experience.
The RAF Museum has an enviable reputation for providing exciting and innovative education opportunities that already attract more than 40,000 students each year. The Museum is determined to build on this success by engaging with schools in all the London Boroughs and widening participation to secondary and tertiary education.
The Museum will substantially increase the number of formal education groups it attracts, providing an improved offer to schools and organisations, including outreach and loan box activities linked to a Museum visit. Schools programmes will be developed that are relevant, inclusive and support the National Curriculum. They will cater for broad audiences while retaining the intimacy essential to life long learning.
